  1. Roku Media player is rather limited in what it can play – I threw a number of various MKV, MP4, and AVI files at it, and it successfully played only a few. It can’t handle DTS conversion to 2-channel, subtitles integrated into an MKV, H265 codec, nor any type of AVI files. Most disappointing.

Plex handles all these things, but the media must be from a server – Plex doesn’t handle portable(USB) media.

  2. Emby works on just about everything, i do prefer plex, but Emby has the advantage of being able to transcode FROM an android device to any other device using Emby server BETA. its a bit of a fiddle to set up but its great when it works!

  3. Isn’t there anything to just play the files. I don’t need a whole separate system running to stream stuff. The whole point of a Smart TV is less devices. I plug my 8TB HDD into the usb n there’s all my stuff. Unfortunately, Roku media player needs updated audio codecs. Anyone know an alternate player that doesn’t require streaming? Seems like tech is going backwards when you need anther whole system to broadcast your shows.
