Take Screenshot on Android 12 With Tap Back Gesture

If you’re one of the lucky owners of a device running Android 12, the feature is baked right into the OS. Google has been experimenting with it since a couple of years but it is finally here. As of this writing, the tap back gesture, officially called Double Tap on Android 12, gives you a choice between five actions.

When you perform a Double Tap on the back of your Android 12 device, you can either Open Assistant, Take screenshot, Play and pause media, See recent apps, or Open notifications. Here’s how to configure Android 12’s double tap gesture.

  1. Open the Android Settings app.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom and select System.
  3. Next, go to Gestures and select Double Tap.
  4. Turn on the toggle at the top to enable Android 12’s Double Tap feature.
  5. Select one of the available actions.
  6. You can also enable the toggle at the bottom that says Require harder taps if you feel the double tap gesture is too sensitive.

If you are using older versions of Android, you can still use Android 12’s double tap on the back gesture using the method described below.

While Apple added the feature as an inbuilt functionality for iPhone, there is no such feature that comes inbuilt with Android smartphones prior to Android 12. But we can rely on third-party apps that could do the exact same thing. Let’s find out how to take a screenshot on Android by tapping the back of the phone, using the app.

Tap Tap Disable Battery Optimization

  1. Install Tap, Tap app on your Android phone.
  2. Open the app and toggle on “Enable Gesture” at the top.
  3. Grant accessibility permissions when the app asks.
  4. Tap “Disable Battery Optimization” and allow the app to exclude from battery saver options. This will let the app run in the background all day.
  5. Tap the option “Double Tap” on the app.
  6. From the next screen, drag the “Screenshot” option to the top.
  7. Tap “Add Requirement” to set conditions where the gestures will work.

By default, Triple tap gestures are turned off and double-tap gestures are enabled. You can add actions and triggers to both double-tap and triple-tap options by using the “Add Action” button on-screen. Also, it lets you add multiple actions and custom trigger conditions for each.

Now, you can go and tap the back of your phone to test the feature. Your phone will take the screenshot instantly when you tap the back of your Android phone.

Change Double-Tap Sensitivity

The double-tap gesture on your Android phone works based on gyroscope and accelerometer. The sensitivity levels can vary from device to device, which will in fact give you different experiences on different Android phones. You can, in fact, change the sensitivity levels on the app, so that you can calibrate the app to work perfectly fine on your Android phone.

  1. Open the Tap, Tap app, and go to Gates.
  2. Toggle on conditions you want to enable the double-tap gestures.
  3. Go back to the main screen and tap Gesture.
  4. From the next screen, move the slider to change double-tap sensitivity.

The gates option lets you turn on or off the feature during certain situations. Let’s say you want to take a screenshot by tapping back while you are on a call. You can enable the “On Call” option.

Do More Actions By Tapping Back on Android

Taking screenshots by tapping on the back is obviously not the only thing that Tap, Tap can do. You can set quite a few for both double and triple taps. All you have to do is tap on the Add action button at the bottom. Actions are neatly categorized into four categories: Launch (apps), Utilities, Actions, and Advanced.

The app usually has no problems recognizing a double or triple tap gesture has been performed. But sometimes it recognizes taps when there have been none. You can change the back tap sensitivity on the app to avoid accidental triggers.

Using the Tap, Tap app, you can get the back tap gestures from iOS 14 and Android 11 to any older Android phones. Your phone must be Android 7.0 or later to take screenshots by tapping the back of the phone.
