Find out What’s on the Other Side of the Earth with Your Phone

If you really believed Looney Tunes, you probably think it is China on the opposite side of the earth from where you are living. But now with Google’s new web-based AR tool – Floom – you can find out exactly what is on the other side of the world. The answer for many Americans might not really be China. Don’t take my word, try it out yourself.

Floom opens a portal to the other side of the world right at your feet and shows you where you’ll reach if you dug a tunnel all the way to the other side of the world. Let’s see how you can see what’s on the other side of the earth.

Find What Is on the Other Side of the World

Floom from Google only works on the Google Chrome browser running on Android devices. The web app will use your Android camera for showing you the other side of the world.

  1. Launch the Google Chrome browser on your Android device. floom web app address
  2. Tap on the URL bar and go to floom.withgoogle.com.
  3. Press the button at the bottom that says Let’s Go. Floom AR Tool
  4. On the next page, tap on the Continue button.
  5. A notification popup should now appear asking you to grant location access to Floom.
  6. Tap Allow on the pop-up. grant location access
  7. Tap on the Explore! button next and another permission request will pup up.
  8. Tap Allow again to let Floom create a 3D map of your surroundings and track your camera’s position. grant camera access permission
  9. Position your camera to the floor and move it around for the spiral tunnel animation to appear.

  11. Tap on the spiraling animation to open the portal.

Floom not only uses the camera viewfinder to display what is on the other side of the world, but it also uses the camera position data. This allows you to try different angles and find new places without even having to move. Floom also uses your device’s location and information about your environment. This information does not leave your device, however, because Floom does all the mathematical magic right on your device.
