How to Restore Deleted WhatsApp Messages?(Without Google Drive Backup)

Just imagine that you had deleted a few important WhatsApp messages from your phone by mistake. And, you need to retrieve deleted WhatsApp images as soon as possible. Unfortunately, recycle bin is not available on the iOS and Android phones. To make things worse, the option ‘Back up to Google Drive’ has been set to ‘Never’. Or you never backed up WhatsApp to iCloud from your iPhone. Now you are in a situation, that you cannot restore WhatsApp messages.

Fortunately, WhatsApp is offering an option to restore WhatsApp data even after you deleted. Whether it is iPhone or Android, you can still retrieve deleted WhatsApp messages that you deleted from your smartphone.

Restore Deleted WhatsApp Messages on Android

Even though the Google Drive backup option is the easiest way to backup your WhatsApp messages, people are lazy sometimes and miss it. Some people are not even aware of the backup option while others are concerned about the WhatsApp data consumption or the security. It is not clear whether the messages stored on the Google Drive are also encrypted like the original WhatsApp messages.

The million dollar question! Is it possible to recover the deleted WhatsApp messages without using the Google drive backup option? The answer is “Yes.” You can retrieve deleted WhatsApp messages by using any of the methods given below:

1. Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages from Local Backup

Do you know? WhatsApp backup a copy of your messages every day at 2 AM. And, these messages will be stored in a file either on the memory card or the internal memory of your smartphone. You can simply recover the deleted WhatsApp messages from this local backup copy.

Follow the below steps to recover the deleted WhatsApp messages. (This method will work only if the Google Drive Backup option is not enabled).

  1. First, uninstall the WhatsApp messenger from your phone.
  2. Then, reinstall the app from the Google play store.
  3. Open the WhatsApp, complete the verification process once again by entering the 6-digit verification code received via SMS or voice call.
  4. Now, you should see a screen titled “Restore Backup” with the message “Backup found” and two buttons namely “RESTORE” and “SKIP”.
  5. Just click the “RESTORE” button to start the recovery procedure. Based on the size of the messages, it will take a few seconds or a couple of minutes to restore all your messages.
  6. Once all the messages are restored, you will see a “NEXT” button. Click that button and follow the on-screen instructions to reload your WhatsApp profile.

2. Restore Deleted WhatsApp Messages using File Manager

Sometimes you may not need to recover all the message for WhatsApp. You may need to restore files from a certain date or time. If you would like to restore the messages other than the most recent ones, then you need to do the recovery manually using a file manager app. For manual recovery, follow the steps below:

  1. Download and install file manager app (preferably a free version from the Google Play Store).
  2. Open the file manager app and navigate to the folder /WhatsApp/databases. This folder will be located either on the SD card or the internal memory of your smartphone.
  3. From the database folder, find out the files with the following name format. msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12YYYY-MM-DD indicates the data on which the file was created. Also, you will see a file named msgstore.db.crypt12 which is nothing but the most recent backup file.
  4. Now, if you need to recover messages on a particular date, you have to rename that file to msgstore.db.crypt12. (WhatsApp will always restore data from the file named msgstore.db.crypt12. You can rename any dated file to this default file name and Whatsapp will restore data to that date). Make sure to backup current msgstore.db.crypt12 file before renaming.
  5. Now, uninstall the WhatsApp and reinstall from the Google PlayStore.
  6. After you complete the Whatsapp verification process, click the “RESTORE” button when the screen prompts the same.

Now WhatsApp will restore the data from the file you renamed. You can repeat the process to get back the WhatsApp data from any date by renaming the backup files.

Restore Deleted WhatsApp Messages on iPhone

WhatsApp supports automatic local backup only for Android and Windows-based phones. And the iOS version will not allow to backup WhatsApp to Google Drives. Hence, the above method won’t work for iPhones.

You need to rely either on iTunes or iCloud to recover the deleted WhatsApp messages on your iPhone.

1. Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages from iCloud.

To backup WhatsApp messages, you need to link iCloud account so that a copy of your messages will be stored on the iCloud. Like the Google Drive Backup in Android OS, here also you can configure the backup frequency.

You can recover the deleted WhatsApp messages if the “Auto Backup” option is set to ON or you had taken a manual backup before. Just follow the below-listed steps:WhatsApp Restore iCloud

  1. Uninstall the WhatsApp from your iPhone.
  2. Reinstall the app after downloading the same from the iTunes.
  3. Open the app and verify phone number after entering the security code.
  4. Now, you should see a screen titled “Restore from iCloud” with a clickable text “Restore Chat History”.
  5. Click the text “Restore Chat History” to start the recovery procedure. Based on the size of the messages, it will take a few seconds or a couple of minutes to restore all your messages.
  6. Once all the messages are restored, click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to reload your WhatsApp profile.

Before you ahead with WhatsApp recovery process from iCloud, make sure you are already turned on WhatsApp backup option with iCloud.

2. Recover Deleted WhatsApp messages from iTunes

Have you forgotten to configure the iCloud backup option? No need to panic. Still, you can recover the deleted WhatsApp messages if you are using the iTunes backup option frequently.

  1. Connect your iPhone to the computer using the USB cable.
  2. Open the iTunes on your computer.
  3. Wait and make sure that the PC detects your iPhone.
  4. Backup iPhone before you begin to save the current data.
  5. Now, click the iPhone icon located on the iTunes and select the option “Restore backup.”
  6. You will get an option to recover from several previous backup copies. Select the file which backs up the date before you delete the WhatsApp data.
  7. Now click the ‘Restore’ button.
